How Medicare Advantage Works

When you join a Medicare Advantage plan, you're still enrolled in Medicare — but the private insurer, not the government, manages your Part A and Part B benefits. Most plans also include Part D prescription drug coverage, and many add extra benefits like dental, vision, and hearing.

Most Medicare Advantage plans use a network (HMO or PPO), so checking that your doctors and pharmacies are in-network is one of the most important steps before enrolling.

Frequently Asked Questions

Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans are offered by private insurers and often combine hospital, medical, and drug coverage — and sometimes extra benefits — into one plan, usually with a regional network. Original Medicare (Part A and Part B) is run directly by the federal government, is generally accepted nationwide, and does not include drug coverage unless you add a separate Part D plan.
