Medicare Plans for Veterans

Medicare Advantage plans for veterans are private plans that can complement the healthcare benefits provided by the Department of Veterans Affairs, giving you additional coverage options alongside your VA care.

We can help you understand how Medicare Advantage coordinates with VA benefits and TRICARE for Life, what these plans typically cover, and whether one fits your situation.

How Medicare Advantage Works for Veterans

Medicare Advantage plans are offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare. They include all Original Medicare (Part A and Part B) benefits, plus additional services — and are available to any Medicare-eligible veteran, regardless of your VA enrollment status.

Many veterans use VA healthcare and Medicare together, choosing whichever coverage makes sense for a given need — this gives you more options for where and how you get care.

Veteran Coverage Basics You Should Know

Works Alongside VA Benefits

A Medicare Advantage plan doesn't replace your VA benefits — it works alongside them, and you can generally continue using VA facilities as you do today.

Coordinates with TRICARE

If you have TRICARE for Life, your Medicare Advantage plan becomes the primary payer, and TRICARE typically covers much of what's left.

May Add Extra Benefits

Many plans add dental, vision, hearing, prescription drug coverage, wellness programs, and gym memberships on top of Original Medicare.

Step 1 of 2 — Basic Info

Eligibility

You must be enrolled in Medicare Part A and Part B and live in the plan's service area. Any Medicare-eligible veteran can enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan — it's available regardless of whether you also use VA healthcare.

Enrollment Periods

You can enroll during your Initial Enrollment Period, the Annual Enrollment Period (October 15 – December 7), the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (January 1 – March 31), or a Special Enrollment Period after a qualifying life event.

Cost Structure

Monthly premiums vary by plan, and some offer $0 premiums. You'll still see deductibles, copays, and coinsurance, but an annual out-of-pocket maximum caps what you pay in a plan year.

VA & TRICARE Coordination

If you have TRICARE for Life and enroll in Medicare Advantage, your plan becomes the primary payer. TRICARE typically steps in as supplemental coverage for much of what's left, including remaining deductibles, copays, and coinsurance.

Comprehensive Coverage

Coverage can include inpatient and outpatient care, skilled nursing facility care, diagnostic tests and surgeries, home health care, durable medical equipment, and preventive services.
