What Is a Medicare 'Loss of Deemed Status' Notice?

Some people automatically qualify for Extra Help (the Low-Income Subsidy) with Part D drug costs because they're enrolled in both Medicare and Medicaid, in a Medicare Savings Program, or receiving Supplemental Security Income. This automatic qualification is called being 'deemed' eligible.
If your circumstances change and you no longer meet one of those automatic-qualification categories, you'll typically receive a notice — sometimes called the 'grey notice' — letting you know your automatic Extra Help is ending. This only affects your Part D drug coverage, not your Part A or Part B benefits.

You can reapply for Extra Help directly through Social Security if you think you still qualify based on income and resources, even without automatic deemed status. It's worth doing this promptly, since losing Extra Help can meaningfully raise your drug costs.
