Original Medicare (Part A and Part B) does not cover the shingles vaccine. Coverage comes through Part D — either a standalone Part D plan or the drug coverage built into most Medicare Advantage plans.
Shingrix is currently the only FDA-approved shingles vaccine (the older Zostavax vaccine was discontinued). It's given as two doses spaced two to six months apart, and it's commonly recommended for adults 50 and older without severe immune issues.

Because ACIP-recommended adult vaccines like Shingrix are covered under Part D, many beneficiaries pay little to nothing out of pocket, though exact cost-sharing depends on your specific plan's formulary tier. Ask your plan or pharmacy for your specific cost before you get the shot.
About one in three people will develop shingles in their lifetime, and the vaccine is highly effective at reducing that risk, which is why it's broadly recommended for older adults regardless of whether you've had shingles before.
