Supplemental Benefits: Medicare Advantage vs. Medigap

Both aim to fill gaps in Original Medicare, but they do it in very different ways.

Two Different Approaches to the Same Problem

Original Medicare leaves gaps — no dental, vision, or hearing coverage, and no cap on your out-of-pocket coinsurance. Medicare Advantage and Medigap both aim to address these gaps, but in very different ways.

Medicare Advantage bundles your medical coverage, often drug coverage, and supplemental extras like dental, vision, and hearing into one plan, usually with a defined provider network. Medigap instead works alongside Original Medicare, helping cover your out-of-pocket costs like deductibles and coinsurance, but it doesn't add dental or vision coverage and requires a separate Part D plan for drug coverage.

Which Approach Tends to Fit Whom

Medicare Advantage often appeals to people who want lower typical premiums and built-in extra benefits, and who are comfortable with a defined network. Medigap tends to appeal to people who want predictable costs and the ability to see any provider who accepts Medicare, especially if they use a lot of care and want to avoid surprise coinsurance bills.

If dental, vision, or hearing coverage matters to you and you choose Medigap, you can typically add a standalone dental or vision plan separately to fill that specific gap.

Frequently Asked Questions

No — you generally can't have both. Medigap is designed to work with Original Medicare, not alongside a Medicare Advantage plan.
